Become a supervising veterinarian in the Netherlands

Are you a dedicated veterinarian from an EU member state ready for a new adventure in the Netherlands? Embrace a great opportunity and join the NVWA – the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority – as a supervising veterinarian. We will help you on your way to a brighter future. We’re looking for dedicated supervisory veterinarians across all twelve provinces in the Netherlands. This is a key role, for which we offer an excellent benefits package and the opportunity to work part-time, by agreement.

A supervising veterinarian with the NVWA

As a supervising veterinarian, you want animals to be healthy and be given the best possible treatment. Every day you ensure that tens of thousands of animals at farms and slaughterhouses are treated in line with the strict legal requirements laid down in Dutch law. You also consider another vital issue: is the meat fit for consumption? If you want to have a real impact by improving animal welfare on a large scale and ensuring food safety, this is the job for you.

The NVWA is one of the largest employers of veterinarians in the Netherlands, in the European Union and even worldwide.

First things first

We’re ready to assist you through each step of your relocation: from finding somewhere to live to arranging a work permit, obtaining a BSN number (citizen service number, used to access government services in the Netherlands), arranging health insurance, opening a bank account, exchanging your driving licence and many other arrangements you need to make.

Once all these practical matters have been taken care of, you’ll start an intensive training programme, beginning with a 19-week Dutch language course. This marks the start of a great adventure as a supervising veterinarian with the NVWA. After completing the language course, you’ll receive basic training for supervising veterinarians in the Netherlands; each module concludes with an assessment. During the training programme, you’ll take the necessary steps to ensure you pass the state examinations in Dutch at B2 level.
